This page is for the thoroughly documented saga of my very first playthrough of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Even though this is a ten-year-old game, I finally played it for the first time in spring of 2021 when I got a Nintendo Switch.

And, being me, I decided to document my playthrough in depth. This turned out to amuse a lot of folks who follow me on social media as well as on my annathepiper.org blog and its Dreamwidth mirror. More than one person decided to play Skyrim again because of my reminding them of the fun they’d had before. And at least one person also started playing it on the Switch for the first time! This page is dedicated to all of you!

Note that a lot of my initial sessions with Alarrah started as being documented on Twitter and Facebook first–before I got detailed enough with them that I shifted over to posting blog posts on WordPress instead, because that was easier for me to write up.

She is named for a character in my Rebels of Adalonia books, Valor of the Healer, Vengeance of the Hunter, and Victory of the Hawk.

Alarrah’s Backstory

As Alarrah was a Bosmer, I decided that her backstory for how she wound up in Skyrim was fairly straightforward: she fled Valenwood to escape Thalmor persecution. When I got to the point of running the Dawnguard plot, I decided as well that Alarrah never knew her parents and grew up alone.

Playthrough Posts

Here are all of Alarrah’s playthrough posts! These are listed in descending chronological order. Note the pagination controls; you can use those to page through to subsequent posts.

Several of the initial posts in this playthrough were initially links off to Twitter threads, which I created backdated WordPress posts for here. Once I deleted my Twitter account, I reconstructed the threads locally in the posts to maintain what I’d tweeted at the time. This also let me add location and other tags to those threads, and made it easier to list the posts of Alarrah’s playthrough the same way I’ve done other playthroughs since.

You can also browse Alarrah’s posts via her playthrough category link.

  • In Which the Dragonborn Goes to Mzulft and Volunruud - 06/21/2021
In which the Dragonborn kills a couple more Blood Dragons, re-visits Mzulft to search for Dwemer cogs, and ventures into Volunruud for another “source of power”, where she learns the first word of Aura Whisper.
  • In Which the Dragonborn Becomes Arch-Mage and Thane of Winterhold - 06/20/2021
In which the Dragonborn becomes Arch-Mage of the College of Winterhold, after saving it from destruction--and in which, though it's decidedly politically awkward, she also becomes Thane of Winterhold.
  • In Which the Dragonborn Seeks the Staff of Magnus - 06/19/2021
In which the Dragonborn, after reporting back to the College of Winterhold with recovered books, goes down into the Midden and learns from the Augur of Dunlain that she needs to find the Staff of Magnus; and in which she heads to Mzulft to do exactly that.
  • In Which the Dragonborn Quests for the College of Winterhold - 06/18/2021
In which the Dragonborn traipses hither and yon doing quests for the College of Winterhold (is this going to count to my course credit?); in which she is warned by the Psijic Order that things are about to get serious with that orb thing; and in which she kills a whole bunch of dragons, necromancers, bandits, and Falmer.
  • In Which the Dragonborn Joins the College of Winterhold - 06/17/2021
In which the Dragonborn makes friends and influences orcs, by bringing a stronghold the enchanted gauntlets they wanted; in which she kills not one but two Blood Dragons; and in which she sends Lydia home for an extended break while she joins the College of Winterhold and learns how to be a mage.
